West Richland Events

Young MarinesThe latest edition of West Richland “City Scene” (you know, that newsletter you get in your city utility bill) has details of the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in West Richland.

Date: November 8, 2008
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Where: Starts at Grosscup Road and ends at 38th Avenue.

After the parade, everyone’s invited to go to Flat Top Park for a chili feed hosted by the Combat Veterans.

Want to be in the parade? The city says applications are available now at City Hall or the West Richland Chamber office. Call the Chamber at 967-0521 for more info.

Want to volunteer to help? Same thing — call the Chamber office at 967-0521 if you can help with this year’s parade.

(If you’re curious, I took the photo above at the 2006 Veteran’s Day Parade.)

Despite the rain that was on and off all day today, the West Richland Harvest Festival went ahead as planned at Flat Top Park. Only problem was, seemed like most of West Richland assumed it was cancelled. That big open field at Flat Top is usually bursting with people at this event, but I swear — me and ten friends would’ve had enough room to play a game of tackle football. There weren’t many people out in the rain today.

If you’re one of the ones who missed it, here are some photos from my Flickr account….

Wiley had their annual open house tonight, and with two kids attending and Cari on the PTO board, the McGees were all over this event. This is one of those things that I never really look forward to, but always seem to have a good time when I’m there. It’s good to see neighbors, parents of your kids’ friends, your kids’ teachers, etc. And both of our kids seem to enjoy showing off their school work, which is a big part of the festivities — you go see their classroom, meet the teacher (again), and see what they’ve been working on for the first 2-3 weeks of classes.

We also got to hear the Wiley Steel Drum Band do a little performance in the gym, and got to fight the throngs of people jammed into the school library for the Book Fair. You couldn’t move more than a couple feet without someone else blocking your path.

I took a few photos and put them on Flickr. Enjoy!

Mark your calendars for September 20 — that’s the date for this year’s Harvest Festival at Flat Top Park in West Richland. The day’s events will run from 11 am until about 4 pm. What’s on tap?

  • Fun stuff and activities for kids, including the chance to get up close and personal with some BIG trucks.
  • Live music.
  • The GESA games.
  • Food.
  • Market with stuff for sale.

It’s the 11th annual Harvest Festival, and this year the sponsors include the Red Mountain Lions Club, the West Richland Chamber of Commerce, and the City of West Richland.

Hope to see you there!

Remy, from RatatouilleThe city of West Richland has announced the four movies that will be shown at Flat Top Park this month and next:

August 8: Ratatouille — Do I need to mention that this is one of my all-time favorite movies? I (heart) Pixar and this is one of their best. That’s Remy, the main character, pictured at right.

August 15: Big — Another movie I love. When Cari and I were in New York this past spring, we went to the ginormous FAO Schwarz store where some of this movie was filmed — they still have the huge, step-on keyboard and you can take your shoes off and try to recreate the movie scene yourself!

August 22: The Shakiest Gun in the West — Sorry, I have no pithy comments on this one, but I think I saw it in grade school.

September 5: The Goonies — Never saw this one.

These movies are free and are showing at dusk, after the evening’s “Concert in the Pavilion.” Bring a blanket and/or some chairs and enjoy the West Richland summer. And if you like music, too, we already posted the Concerts at the Pavilion schedule, too.

If you’re looking for something fun before the fireworks shows (which won’t start until about 10 pm), don’t forget that the Mid Columbia Symphony will be celebrating the 4th of July with a free concert in West Richland. It’ll start at 7 pm on Friday. The symphony will be playing pops and patriotic songs to celebrate Independence Day. Guaranteed good time with great music!
