Black Heron Spirits, the new liquor distillery that’s located at Keene Rd. and Van Giesen Ave. is planning a grand opening and ribbon cutting on October 1st. KNDU-TV ran a story on the new business last night. Here’s the video if you missed it:

The Tri-City Herald ran a nice feature in Sunday’s paper on the West Richland Beer and Wine Shop, a unique business that Steve Many opened more than a year ago at 4033 W Van Giesen St. It’s a cool, somewhat short article, but talks about what make’s the store stand out: being unique.

The 63-year-old retired grocery store owner offers microbrews made in California, Oregon and Washington, and bottled beer from Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Jamaica, Thailand and China.

He also regularly carries about 15 of the nearly 30 beers made by Samuel Adams. A big grocery store typically carries five, he said.

He also sells a limited selection of local wines. Most are from wineries that don’t have distributors.

Review: Henry’s Restaurant, West Richland

My wife has eaten at Henry’s a number of times and always enjoyed it, but for whatever reason, I never tried it until going twice within the past couple weeks while we had visitors in town. We went for breakfast one day with my mom-in-law, and then for lunch a different when a friend from Seattle was visiting. And now I’m wondering … what took me so long to eat at Henry’s!?!

Food: The food was delicious at both meals. The servings are very generous, too. For breakfast, I ordered the eggs/meat/hash brown combo — the same kind of thing you can get at any breakfast restaurant — but I actually couldn’t finish my meal at Henry’s. There was that much food on the plate. The hash browns were a little overdone for my taste, but the meal overall was still delicious.

For lunch, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and loved it. Really thick bacon on top of a larger burger, nice fresh bun … yummm. The steak fries were good, too, though fairly normal. No special seasonings or anything like you may find at some places. Still, that was fine with me.

Price: Very reasonable prices. Our breakfast for five people was less than $60 (that includes the tip) and lunch was less than $50 (tip included).

Service: At both meals we had a 5-person group, and our meals were served as quickly as you’d want. We had time to chat together before the food arrived, but no one felt like we were waiting too long. The wait staff was quite nice.

Atmosphere: Henry’s is a fairly small place, but you don’t feel cramped or anything like that. I didn’t count, but I’d guess they have 10-12 booths and maybe 4-5 tables. It’s a pretty typical, small-town restaurant atmosphere. Clean, too.

Summary

Henry’s is like a hidden gem. Can’t believe I hadn’t tried it sooner, but now that I have, I’ll be going back and bringing guests regularly. It’s great that West Richland has a restaurant of this quality so we don’t need to drive down near the mall or somewhere else to get a good meal away from home.

Here’s the latest news we’ve heard as it related to business doings in and around West Richland.

Shelby SuperCars recently announced a partnership with renowned car designer Jason Castriota. He’ll work with the company for a minimum of one year and design Shelby’s next two models. You probably know the Shelby name as the developer of the world’s fastest production car. You can read more about the partnership.
Thai City, a new restaurant, recently had its grand opening in West Richland. It’s located in the Plaza II strip mall on Van Giesen St.

Liquor Distillery coming to West Richland

Did you catch this in the news this week? Winemaker Joel Tefft is planning to open a distillery here in West Richland — it’ll be the first distillery in southeastern Washington. The groundbreaking for Black Heron Spirits Distillery and Ports Works was Wednesday out at the intersection of Keene Rd. and Van Giesen.

Club 24 Fitness opening next week in West Richland

You may have received a postcard today announcing that Club 24 Express Fitness is now open at its West Richland location in Paradise Plaza near Yoke’s. But it’s actually not open yet.

I contacted Club 24 via email, and they’re saying it’s likely to open next week; the exact date isn’t certain yet — it depends on final inspections and stuff like that.

They are planning a big, two-day grand opening on Friday, January 8th and Saturday the 9th, from 8 am to 5 pm on both days. There’ll be tours of the facility, door prizes, and more. And the first 200 people to join the club will get some free workout gear, too. You can get more info about the West Richland location, and can even sign-up in advance online, via the Club 24 web site.

I’ve been planning to join for some time now, and the amount of food I’ve eaten over the holiday only confirms the decision.

Baum’s Chocolates coming to West Richland

Baum’s Chocolates will have a new home in early 2010 — a new home in West Richland. KEPR reported the move a few days ago, saying the store will be moving to the old GESA location right on Van Giesen Avenue.

“The big advantage of moving to West Richland is better exposure from the street. We won’t be hidden quite as much as back in this corner,” says owner Rick Vance.

The story says Baum’s will open in West Richland after Valentine’s Day.

Avocado Grill has closed

This won’t be news to some of you, but it was news to me when I drove by a couple days ago: Avocado Mexican Grill up in the Paradise Plaza shopping center (near Yoke’s) has closed down. The door and windows are all covered and there’s a sign saying “We are closed permanently.”

Cari had eaten there and said it was good, but apparently not enough people overall ate there and/or liked it. Shame, too. We need more restaurants in West Richland, not less. I suspect Avocado was hurt a little by being the furthest business away from Bombing Range Rd. in that whole Yoke’s shopping/business center.

There are two other spaces unoccupied at Paradise Plaza, which isn’t a good sign.

Congrats to Smitty’s Paradise

It’s not every day that a West Richland business wins a national award, so we’d like to congratulate Smitty’s Paradise on winning the Best Interior Design award in a nationwide contest sponsored by Convenience Store News.

When the store opened last summer, I wrote on this blog, “I went in over the weekend with my kids, and the inside is really nice. It’s super clean, of course — but it also looks nice, looks a little different from the typical mini-mart store.” Guess I should’ve said it looks “very different” from the typical store.

This is good news: Club 24 Fitness is coming to West Richland, perhaps as soon as next month! If you’ve been in the Yoke’s/Paradise Place shopping area on Bird Hill, you may have seen the signs in the windows:

From what I could tell, the fitness club is taking up the spaces that used to be occupied by three separate businesses. So it should have a nice amount of space for equipment and such.

The Club 24 web site only says “December 2009″ about a grand opening date for the West Richland location. Perfect. Just in time for everyone (like me) who’ll surely be over-eating during the holidays.

There’s no information on their site about pricing at the West Richland location, but the Richland facility pricing runs $25 per month with a year-long contract, or $35 per month with no contract. All of the Club 24 locations have that same pricing, so our local one might, too. Unfortunately, there’s also a one-time $69 “membership fee.” Ugh. I much prefer the fitness clubs that skip the membership thing and just charge a monthly fee (like River Walk Fitness in Richland does). But I may still give some thought to signing up at our local Club 24 when it opens.
