Thx for sharing your thoughts, Ken. Nice to meet you. :-)

I'm a big fan of freedom and government getting out of the way, but I don't think freedom means that my neighbors have the right to do things that are likely to cause property or bodily harm to me. There's a reason we have laws that people can't just walk around town starting fires wherever they want, or firing guns into the air randomly. Freedom only extends so far over personal behavior, and even though fireworks are pretty and fun, I don't think pro-level fireworks like these have any place in a residential neighborhood.

I also live in West Richland, and i don't believe they are illegal. The reason I say that is I was able to buy fireworks similar to what you are showing, from the firework tent on Van Giesen, right after the bridge that crosses the Yakima river, and from what I've read, if you can buy it in city limits, its legal to use in city limits.

With that said, I hope they don't shut this down, as it is only one day a year, and it does provide alot of fun for you and your neighbors. And if you're worried about the fire danger, take a lawn chair, sit in your front lawn with hose ready, enjoy the show and if something does land on your roof, take care of it immediately. Shoot, a neighbor two houses down went one step further and sat on top of his roof with his kid all night watching the display, ready to take action if needed.

I think on the one night where we celebrate our freedom, we don't need to take away even more freedoms.

Just my 2 cents . . . .

Well, it doesn't get dark up here at this time of year until about 10 pm, so that's when the fireworks usually begin -- the real big displays, that is. I don't know what the answer is. The timing isn't what bothers me, it's the fact that we're doing huge fireworks displays above people's houses. Seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

Hey Matt,
Tough call. I didn't see any fireworks last night and would loved to have been able to see this display from my driveway. However, I was also sound asleep at 11:45pm :-)

As usual, seems like a compromise would be in order. Love the fireworks but end them at 10:00?
